Has COVID-19 managed to move you outside of your comfort zone?
Join the club. It just happens to be a club that includes virtually everyone in the entire world. Not exactly a club you’d want to manage membership for, I’m certain.
Just like I’m certain that, at the outset of 2020, you weren’t expecting that finding a 6-pack of Charmin mega rolls at the store would literally be the high point of your week. But here we are. You’ll never look at toilet paper the same way again.
And that’s a good thing.
The COVID-19 pandemic has been a global tragedy. Countless thousands of lives lost, economic upheaval and hardship, fear, uncertainty, and chaos have consumed so much of our attention that it is all too easy to overlook any positive outcomes of the crisis. But they are there.
Like how much you now appreciate the hell out of the guy who’s cooking your food at the fast food restaurant that – THANK GOD – was still open at this hour.
Like driving. Somewhere. Nowhere. Anywhere that isn’t inside four walls. Windows up, windows down, rain, sun, WHO CARES it’s a beautiful day!
Like talking on the phone. To close and distant friends, your judgmental Aunt Judy, hell, even telemarketers are welcome. “I hope they’re letting you work remotely, Ahmed. You’ve gotta stay safe!”
Like working remotely. It’s still work, but minus the commute, shower, makeup, and pants. With all that time saved, you’ve never been so productive!
Like taking a shower. Just close your eyes and you can imagine being on vacation beneath a tropical waterfall. (Bring a cocktail for full effect).
Like recipes. Who cares if there isn’t any lime juice, Sprite will probably work just as well.
Like your dishwasher’s loading capacity. Who knew your new hobby would make such a mess?
Like delivery. Your own personal supply chain.
Like streaming media. Can you imagine being locked down with nothing but daytime TV to watch? Shudder.
Like coupons and gift cards. Hey, I think I found dinner! Does Starbucks deliver?
Like spending more time with your family and loved ones. Going for walks. Playing board games. Helping with school work. And telling each other that everything is going to be alright.
If you are still healthy and (relatively) sane, then perhaps COVID-19 has been a blessing to you. It has opened you up to appreciation for these simple things, and others. It’s brought people together while keeping them apart. Thanks to COVID-19, even stupid people now know that coughing in your face is a real dick move.
So take a moment, and let the appreciation soak in like that lush tropical waterfall in your shower.
Life is good.
Hey, change is hard. But don’t worry. We are absolutely here for you. Not like those disembodied voices in every ad you see on TV. For realz. Give us a call and we’ll talk it out. Yes, that includes you too, Aunt Judy.
